Mission: Creating an environment that empowers women in crisis to achieve positive long-term change.
Established in 1980, The Beacon is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization and client-centered community that provides a safe and supportive living environment for adult women in Central Iowa who have experienced trauma and systemic inequity. These social factors often serve as precursors to substance use and involvement with the criminal justice system. The Beacon exists to break that cycle.
Women who enter our doors are met with dignity, compassion, and trauma-informed care. Through emergency shelter, supportive housing, and individualized case management, we empower women to move toward healing, stability, and long-term success.
In February 2024, we expanded our impact with the opening of The Beacon Village—a former motel transformed into 32 efficiency units. This space offers women the opportunity to rebuild their lives in a community designed for growth, connection, and continued recovery.
The Beacon is more than shelter—it’s a place to begin again. We welcome individuals, businesses, and partners to join us in creating a stronger, more inclusive community for all.
